Where the money actually comes from
six streams, ranked by how much I believe in themSponsored boards
A game studio, a restaurant chain, a phone brand pays for the official board for their own product. It ranks like any other board — it just gets a label and a slot right under the top result. Honest, sells itself, and the brand gets argued about for free.
Pro subscriptions
The people who make the most boards are the ones who care about analytics, private drafts and a clean ad-free page. $4/month at a 1–2% conversion rate on a real audience beats display ads by an order of magnitude.
Affiliate on place boards
Every board is pinned to a place. A restaurant board can carry "book a table", a game board "get it on Steam", a product board "check the price". Same place data, three ways to monetise it — and it is genuinely useful, not an interruption.
Display slots
The fallback, not the plan. One slot per page, hard-capped, never inside a board. Useful while traffic is small; becomes noise once Pro exists, which is why Pro exists.
Creator payouts
Boards that pull real traffic get a revenue share. Keeps the best list-makers on the site instead of on their own subreddit, and turns your top creators into a sales force.
Data & embeds
"What is the internet arguing about this week" is a genuinely sellable signal. Plus a white-label embed so other sites can run a tier board inside their own page. Only worth anything once the boards are good.
Two rules I would not break
the boring part that keeps the whole thing credibleMoney never moves a ranking
A sponsored board gets a label and a fixed slot — it does not get votes, and it never takes the #1 spot. The moment a brand can buy the top of a ranking, the ranking is worthless.
Ads are labelled, and users are not the product
No selling individual browsing data. Brands get aggregate results — "62% put your flagship in S" — which is more useful to them than a list of names anyway.
